It’s where innovative businesses are incubated, nighttime economies flourish, and genuine cultural experiences attract visitors. Not only do the arts enhance our quality of life, but they serve as a true economic driver, supporting robust tourism, vital jobs and our community’s overall well-being.
The ABAE played a lead role in gathering the local arts and economic results, joining with the Lane Arts Council and the City of Eugene, along with 89 local arts organizations, in collecting 975 surveys from attendees at 60 distinct events in 2022.

Not only do the arts enhance our quality of life, but they serve as a true economic driver, supporting robust tourism, vital jobs and our community’s overall well-being.
The numbers speak volumes. In all, arts and culture spending surpassed $124 million in Eugene in 2022, including $90 million in direct spending by Eugene’s nonprofit arts and culture organizations and $34 million in audience spending, beyond the price of admission. When people attend cultural events, their spending extends far beyond tickets. They make an evening of it, dining at local restaurants, patronizing nearby businesses, and paying for parking.
A few key insights:
- Total event attendance in Eugene surpassed 1.1 million, with more than 13% of attendees being visitors to Lane County.
- The arts attracted nearly 150k visitors to Lane County in 2022; 79% of nonlocal attendees travel to Eugene specifically for arts events.
- Nonlocal attendees spend an average of $68.73 per person, double that of their local counterparts.
What the arts mean to our community:
- Arts and culture play a pivotal role in fostering neighborhood pride, cultural identity, and community unity. They promote empathy, tolerance, and inclusion by showcasing diverse perspectives.
- 41% of local residents said they would travel to another community if similar arts and cultural activities were not available here.
- 2,714 jobs are supported by arts and culture.
